Tattoo Aftercare
first days
Immediately after, the tattoo artist will protect your tattoo with what we call second skin. This is a band aid for tattoos. It is a protective, transparent film. It creates a barrier that shields the tattoo from dirt, bacteria, and friction while maintaining a moist environment conducive to healing. You will leave this on for 3 days.
Removing the second skin
You loosen the edges, then Remove Slowly and Gently. Pull the film back parallel to the skin rather than upwards. Stretch the film away from the skin as you peel to reduce discomfort. If the adhesive feels too strong, run warm water over the area or soak it in a warm shower for a few minutes. This softens the adhesive and makes removal easier.
Once the second skin is off, wash the tattoo gently with unscented, antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. Apply a thin layer of recommended tattoo aftercare ointment or moisturizer to keep the area hydrated and promote healing.
First weeks
During the healing phase, avoid submerging your tattoo in water, such as pools, hot tubs, or baths. Stick to showers instead. Protect the tattoo from direct sunlight, and avoid using tanning beds. Once healed, use sunscreen to prevent fading.
Do not pick or scratch scabs that form, as this can cause scarring and loss of ink. Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent irritation. Healing typically takes 2-4 weeks, but full recovery may take longer depending on the size and placement of the tattoo.
After tattoo is completely healed
Moisturize Regularly: Use a fragrance-free lotion to keep your skin and tattoo hydrated.
Apply Sunscreen: Protect your tattoo from UV rays with a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Sun exposure can fade and blur your tattoo over time.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water promotes overall skin health, keeping your tattoo looking fresh.
Exfoliate Gently: Occasionally exfoliate the tattooed area with a mild scrub to remove dead skin cells and keep the design sharp.
Maintain Healthy Skin: Use products suitable for your skin type and address issues like dryness or irritation promptly.
Touch-Up if Needed: Over time, ink may fade slightly. Professional touch-ups can restore its vibrancy.
Avoid Sunburn: Never allow your tattoo to burn; it damages the skin and distorts the design.
Don’t Over-Wash or Scrub: This can strip the ink and irritate the tattooed skin.
Don’t Pick or Scratch: Scabs, flakes, or itchiness are common during healing, but picking can scar or fade the tattoo.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Keep tattooed skin away from strong cleaning agents or irritants.
Skip Tanning Beds: The concentrated UV exposure can degrade the tattoo's color and precision.
